The Massachusetts Executive Office of Technology Services and Security (TSS) is teaming up with nonprofit InnovateUS to train its staff in the nuances of generative artificial intelligence (AI). Announced this week, the partnership aims to enhance the capabilities of TSS employees by outfitting them with knowledge about AI's practical applications in their daily government tasks.

According to a press release from the Massachusetts government website, employees will learn to quickly identify where AI can not only streamline but also improve public service delivery. They'll further explore how to navigate the deployment of such tools thoughtfully. Technology Services and Security Secretary Jason Snyder conveyed the organization's commitment to this educational initiative with a statement, "This partnership helps solidify our commitment to training our workforce at TSS on this transformative emerging technology, and advancing our ability to serve the state's agencies and constituents."

Beyond practical skill sets, the program lays a strong emphasis on the ethical aspects of using generative AI. It considers privacy risks, intellectual property issues, and the societal challenges posed by deepfakes and privatized AI. By delving into these topics, TSS is striving to ensure a responsible approach to AI integration within governmental services.

Founder of InnovateUS and Director of the Burnes Center for Social Change at Northeastern University, Beth Simone Noveck, highlighted the broader benefits of this training. "By equipping its workforce with practical and ethical AI and digital skills, Massachusetts is positioning itself to deliver better, more efficient and responsive services for its residents," she told the Massachusetts government site. This partnership also emphasizes the state's continued commitment to maintaining an innovative and trustworthy government capable of harnessing AI in public service responsibly.

All TSS staff have immediate access to the training program, which is offered without charge due to the collaboration with InnovateUS. The curriculum includes five modules that focus on best practices, government-centric AI applications, and effective strategies for mitigating risk.
