The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) advises the public to plan ahead and exercise caution on roads and transit systems during the holiday period. MassDOT Interim Secretary and MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng advised travelers to stay alert and cautious whether flying, walking, biking, driving, or using public transit. The travel surge is expected to start today, with traffic peaking from today through Wednesday and again on the next Sunday after Thanksgiving. To reduce congestion, the state will suspend construction work and adjust HOV lane hours on I-93, according to a press release.
With more travelers expected for the holiday, Jonathan Gulliver, Undersecretary and State Highway Administrator, advised drivers to stay focused and allow extra time to reach their destinations. MassDOT also said additional staff will be available at Boston Logan International Airport, and passengers are encouraged to arrive two to three hours before their flights.
Massachusetts State Police Colonel Geoffrey Noble said drivers will see an increased presence of troopers on the roads to help ensure holiday travel safety. The MBTA will also enhance service on various lines and provide updates on schedule changes through its website and the FlyLogan app.
MassDOT is urging drivers to stay focused, avoid distractions, and report any reckless driving. Travel details, including HOV lane extensions and public transit schedules, are available on the MassDOT and MBTA websites. Massport has expanded facilities, such as the Framingham LEX garage, and encourages using HOV options when possible. Both MassDOT and Massport wish the public a safe and smooth holiday travel period.
