In a compassionate outreach to support the community, nearly 1,000 frozen turkeys with accompanying side dishes were handed out to Mecklenburg County residents in need during the Saturdays on Stitt Turkey Giveaway last Saturday. This gesture was aimed at providing relief to those affected by recent SNAP disruptions and the general struggle with food insecurity, a persistent issue in the locale.

The Department of Community Resources undertook this initiative in response to ongoing challenges faced by many, even after SNAP benefits were reinstated post-government shutdown, according to a statement obtained by Mecklenburg County News. "Even though SNAP recipients have had their benefits restored, we know many are still feeling the impacts of food insecurity," said Yulonda Griffin, Director of the department, acknowledging the extended trials faced by the populace residents were warmly welcomed by staff members, who distributed food and provided invaluable information on further resources available.

Partnerships bolstered the distribution event's success, as the Ella B. Scarborough Community Resource Center became a drive-thru nexus of support with aid from local food pantry Nourish Up and the grocery chain Food Lion. The County's commitment doesn’t wane with this singular event; ongoing support is detailed online at MeckNC.gov/Food, extending a lifeline to those still grappling with the insecurity of their next meal.

After the County's Nov. 3 announcement of a $740,000 funding allocation for fiscal year 2026 multiple aid efforts were catalyzed, resulting in over 9,000 individuals receiving a week's worth of groceries through Nourish Up's extensive network while more than 1,000 residents were given 2-day food boxes, in addition to over 115 emergency SNAP participants getting a leg up with $50 food gift cards—and there are still approximately 280 gift cards awaiting distribution to qualified recipients, these efforts, outlined by Mecklenburg County News, manifesting the County's resolve in tackling hunger head-on.

Generosity bloomed in other venues too, with 1,214 SNAP households being granted $50 vouchers for farmers markets, equating to a total of $60,700, and over 1,500 pounds of food donations were amassed at collection sites. Community generosity shone through with more than $7,350 raised via Nourish Up's donation portal, as locals were encouraged to continue their support by contributing financially or dropping off donations at designated regional libraries and recreation centers across the county.
