Amid a federal government shutdown that has suspended November's SNAP benefits, Mecklenburg County is stepping up with a financial commitment to support residents in need of food resources. In action that serves as a stopgap to federal inaction, the county will allocate $740,000 to provide additional assistance to those who have been suddenly cut off from much-needed assistance.
This strategic move comes at a critical time as the shutdown left approximately 138,500 SNAP participants in the area without their usual support, totaling around $24 million each month. Despite the enormity of the funding gap, the county's injection of cash won't match the suspended federal assistance, but local leaders are optimistic that their plan will alleviate some of the resulting strain. Among the efforts are expanded food pantry services, emergency food assistance through gift cards, and increased food distribution to seniors.
The efforts detailed by the county include providing 28,000 additional seven-day food boxes through Nourish Up and securing more resources to saturate all available spots at food pantries. With concerns peaking as the holidays near, Mecklenburg is looking forward to providing around 1,000 households with a holiday turkey through designated distribution at the Ella B. Scarborough Community Resource Center on Nov. 22.
In response to the growing need for culinary support, Mecklenburg County has also launched new initiatives. Food-only gift cards valued at $50 will be given to residents newly approved for emergency SNAP benefits, estimating about 400 such cards being distributed weekly. Moreover, the county is offering a special one-time $50 farmers market voucher to eligible SNAP households and doubling SNAP benefits at local farmers markets.
Residents looking for assistance or seeking to donate can turn to a number of local resources, including United Way’s NC 211 and the Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina. For those in need of a meal or wishing to contribute to the cause, they can visit entities such as the Hearts & Hands Food Pantry, Feeding Charlotte, or the Ada Jenkins Center.
It’s important for residents to remember that existing benefits on their EBT cards are still available for use. Participants are encouraged to check their balance at ebtEDGE.com or call 1-888-622-7328. The county also continues to process SNAP applications and renewals, ensuring that new applicants will be considered despite federal stagnation.
Mecklenburg County's array of community resource centers remain committed to aiding SNAP participants during this period, offering guidance and support at multiple locations including the Valerie C. Woodard Community Resource Center and the Catherine M. Wilson Center. These resources, alongside the expansion of the senior nutrition program and the SNAP/Double Bucks program at farmers markets, demonstrate Mecklenburg County's multifaceted approach to addressing hunger amid a backdrop of federal inaction.
