Memphis is charting a new course in its battle against crime, with data indicating a notable downturn citywide. In a recent presentation before the Memphis City Council, Chief Davis of the Memphis Police Department underscored a year-to-date decline in Part I crimes across all precincts, as reported by the Memphis Police Department's official website.
These statistics aren't just fleeting notes on a graph; they signal a meaningful shift in the city's safety landscape. The report shows double-digit declines for each of the nine Memphis Police Department precincts. Leading the pack is Ridgeway Station with a 36.83% reduction, closely followed by Mt. Moriah Station reporting a 32.57% decrease. Even Raines Station and Appling Farms Station have pared down crime rates by 28.87% and 23.81% respectively, while North Main, Airways, Austin Peay, Crump, and Tillman Stations are not far behind.
The Memphis Police Department's strategy seems to be yielding sustained results, with a three-year comparison from 2023 to 2025 further emphasizing this stride. January and March of 2025 saw substantial dips from the same months in previous years, plunging from 5,233 crimes in January 2023 to 3,710 in 2025, and from 5,300 crimes in March 2023 to 3,632 in 2025. The summer month of August also recorded a remarkable 43% decrease from 5,787 incidents in 2023 to 3,305 in 2025.
These declining trends aren't a mere stroke of luck; they are attributed to a strategic blend of policing efforts. The Memphis Police Department cites increased visibility, the adept use of technology to tackle violent crime, and fortified community partnerships as key drivers, "It takes all of us to build a Stronger, Safer Memphis," the department states.
