An East Memphis neighborhood was shaken by gunfire yesterday after a man shot a dog that had escaped from its yard. The incident occurred on Amboy Road in the Colonial Acres area. The owner of the injured dog, known as "Bella," reported hearing four gunshots before discovering his pet with multiple injuries, according to WREG.
The dog's owner said he confronted his neighbor, who had been walking his own dog when the confrontation occurred. "It was coming at us. What would you have done?" the neighbor purportedly asked, as recounted in an Action News 5 report. The neighbor then fled the scene before Memphis Police Department officers arrived and has not been identified.
Bella was taken to a local animal hospital, where she received surgery for two gunshot wounds. The attending veterinarian confirmed to the officers that the dog was shot in the rear flank and shoulder, but is now on the path to recovery.
