A Mesa teacher is now facing charges following an altercation with a 14-year-old student during a gym class, with authorities stepping in to deal with the situation. According to the Mesa Police Department, 52-year-old Nathan Hansen was arrested after allegedly assaulting the teenager at American Leadership Academy on Pecos Road.
The incident transpired on November 6, just after 3 p.m., when the student reportedly tried to take a phone from Hansen's hand. Surveillance footage, subsequently reviewed by police, appears to show Hansen "pushing the student to the ground and then dragging him by the back of his hoodie," as detailed in an ABC15 report. The altercation continued with Hansen dragging the student off the basketball court and against the bleachers, resulting in minor injuries for the youth.
Following the incident, Mesa authorities took Hansen into custody at his home. "Investigators determined there was probable cause to arrest Nathan for aggravated assault by an adult on a minor under 15 years of age. Nathan was contacted at his residence, interviewed, and subsequently arrested for aggravated assault," the Mesa police stated, according to an ABC15 report.
In response to the altercation, American Leadership Academy has placed Hansen on administrative leave. The school and the police department have not yet released further details regarding the nature of the conflict or the condition of the student post-assault, according to FOX10 Phoenix. As the investigation continues, Mesa police have called for anyone with more information to come forward, solidifying their commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all students in the academic environment.
