The procession is to pay tribute to Sgt. Cajuso, who died following a motorcycle crash along I-75 near the Palmetto Expressway in Hialeah. As part of the commemoration, the motorcade is slated to temporarily halt traffic along key routes as it travels from Vista Memorial Gardens to various locations including the Miami Beach Police Headquarters and Hard Rock Stadium for a memorial service. Drivers are being asked to plan ahead, to possibly allow extra travel time, and to consider using alternate routes, if possible.
As reported by WSVN, the procession was supposed to depart from the funeral home at approximately 8:30 a.m. but had not left as of 9:00 a.m. Once underway, the motorcade will affect traffic south of 41st Street and is expected to bring intermittent closures along Pine Tree Drive, Washington Avenue, and Dade Boulevard until about 10:45 a.m., at which point it will head towards Hard Rock Stadium.
Miami Beach Police Chief Wayne Jones, in an Oct. 28 news conference, lamented the loss of Sgt. Cajuso, calling him "a decorated hero" and highlighting the grief of Cajuso's "young family" he leaves behind, which includes three children and a wife. The community and his colleagues in the police force have shown a strong outpouring of support, a testament to the impact of his service. The service at Hard Rock Stadium was meant to not merely create a space for mourning but also to honor the sergeant's dedication. "David was 33 years old, a decorated hero," Chief Jones said. "He leaves behind three children and a grieving wife. We ask that you keep his young family in your hearts and in your prayers," he told WSVN.
The accident, occurring two weeks prior to the memorial service, was a poignant reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face daily. There were no other vehicles involved in the crash that claimed Sgt. Cajuso's life. Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner voiced the community's shock and sorrow, stating, "Today the worst of our nightmares came true," as noted by WSVN.
