Michigan has seen a substantial victory for its children, thanks to the targeted efforts of the Child Support Unit of the Financial Crimes Division. As reported by Michigan's official Attorney General’s website, more than $450 million in unpaid child support has been funneled into the lives of nearly 31,000 children. This massive undertaking addresses a chronic issue - parents with the means, but lacking the willingness, to financially support their offspring.
Attorney General Dana Nessel underscored the commitment of her team, acknowledging that, "I am proud of the incredible work our Child Support Unit does to make sure Michigan children are properly supported." Working in concert with Friend of the Court and county prosecutors, they seek to systematically hold to account those who can, but choose not to, shoulder their parental responsibilities. In an impressive show of efficacy, this fiscal year has seen a recovery of $28.2 million, as per the AG's office.
Not only does this enforcement action place necessary funds into the hands of custodial parents, but it also eases the financial burden on the state itself. Recoveries have enabled the Child Support Unit to be self-sustaining and have additionally returned over $3.2 million to the State Department of Treasury this fiscal year. The Unit primarily targets parents who are significantly behind, with at least $5,000 in arrears or 24 months without substantial payment, helping to enforce Court orders and encourage parental responsibility.
The repercussions for failing to pay child support are severe. It is a felony that can result in up to 4 years of incarceration, a fine of not more than $2,000, or both. Elizabeth Hertel, director of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, highlighted the operation's broader social impact, stating, per the Attorney General’s website, "Child support enforcement is about helping children thrive." She praised the Child Support Unit for providing a stronger foundation for the future of Michigan's children and families.
