The rustic expanse of Bell Memorial Park is about to undergo a somber transformation as approximately two dozen trees, infested with pine beetles, have been slated for removal. The affected trees, posing a risk to the public, are to be felled beginning Monday, November 24, as the City takes precautionary measures to ensure visitor safety, according to the city's recent announcement.
The contractor responsible for the task, One Two Tree, will target trees along the loop trail's eastern part and behind the sports fields at the park. While much of the trail will be accessible to the public, marked signs will be placed to keep people away from the active work areas for their own protection. The City expects the project's completion by the start of December, however, factors like weather could alter their projected timeline according to the City's statement.
Visitors frequenting Bell Memorial Park are advised to stay vigilant and adhere to the safety signs during this period. The felling of the beetle-infested trees, while a necessity, still evokes a sense of loss for what they have contributed to the park's landscape and the ecosystem at large.
The City has extended its gratitude in anticipation of the public's understanding and patience, as the park undergoes these essential safety measures. "We’d like to thank folks in advance for their patience and understanding at this sad but necessary step," the city's announcement reads.
