The change follows a decision by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) that took place on Nov. 19, according to their recent announcement. Positioned near the vibrant domain of Dinkytown, the park takes its new moniker from the adjacent neighborhood, marking a shift towards local identity and community involvement in the naming process.
The resolution, marked as 2025-233, sailed through the Planning Committee on Nov. 5 and was then clinched by the full Board of Commissioners on Nov. 19. The push for this name change wasn't spontaneous but came as a result of the East Bank Neighborhoods Partnership's outreach and deliberation with the community. Back in 2024, riding on the insights gathered from those living around and enjoying the park since 2022, the partnership suggested the renaming to MPRB. While sitting at 711 11th Ave. SE, the park was previously named after Marcy School, which had claimed the spot in days gone by.
It wasn't all done and dusted without public discourse—far from it. The MPRB invited opinions during two formal channels of feedback: public hearings on Aug. 20 and Sept. 25 in 2025. In the end, it was the voice of the park-goers and residents that helped shape the destiny of what's now known as Dinky Park, cementing a sense of place within the community.
