Noisebridge, the Mission District hackerspace that has long run on a do-ocracy model, is scrambling to raise emergency funds to stay open. Volunteers say the collective has only a few months of runway left and may have to start charging for access or close if new donations do not come in.
According to Mission Local, Noisebridge incurs approximately $12,000 in monthly expenses and operates at a roughly $6,000 monthly deficit. Organizers told the outlet they have only around three months of operating costs in the bank. Mission Local also reports that nearly 80 percent of people who use the space do so for free, and that volunteers have set a year-end fundraising target of $300,000, with the outlet offering a matching pledge that will double donations up to $76,500.
Organizers have launched a community GoFundMe, which has raised about $13,945 as of Nov. 10, according to GoFundMe. The crowdfunding pitch sets a $50,000 bridge goal, while volunteers run events and auctions aimed at converting one-time gifts into recurring support.
Why the Shortfall?
Members say costs increased after Noisebridge relocated to a two-story space at 272 Capp Street in 2020, when it discovered the building had not been properly permitted for years, resulting in nearly $60,000 in permits and upgrades, according to Mission Local. Additionally, a drop in recurring donations following tech layoffs and a temporary closure of the woodshop during renovations left the collective financially strained.
How Members Are Responding
Volunteers have lined up a "Sweet 16" party, a silent auction, classes, and other fundraisers to meet the December push, with fundraising pages detailing sliding-scale tickets and membership drives. The party and auction specifics are posted on the group's event and fundraising platform, as outlined on Givebutter.
Noisebridge's core ethos is that "already a member" means anyone can use the space without a fee, which has made it a rare free resource for makers and artists in San Francisco. The collective's fundraising materials and volunteer organizers say the space's fate now hinges on turning that goodwill into recurring support or finding larger donors to cover rising bills, according to Noisebridge.
