In a recent recognition of efforts toward fostering a healthier community, Montgomery County Councilmember Natali Fani-González was honored with the Distinguished Advocate for Healthful Living Award by the Society of Health and Physical Educators of Maryland (SHAPE MD). This award singles out legislators and public figures who have been outstanding in advocating for health and well-being in education and community settings.
"Promoting healthful living is not just about fitness, it’s about providing families with the opportunity to thrive in communities built for well-being," Councilmember Fani-González said. She has taken a firm stand on integrating healthy living into the broader context of community development, reflecting a belief that wellbeing is foundational for community prosperity. Nominations for the award came strongly from SHAPE Maryland's supervisors dedicated to health, physical education, who pointed to the councilmember's unwavering commitment.
As chair of the Economic Development Committee, Fani-González led multiple initiatives with the goal of weaving wellness into the framework of economic progress. One of her notable contributions was the establishment of the county's first Sports Tourism Task Force, which aims to enhance local athletic programs, engage more youth, and draw major sports events that bring economic benefits alongside promoting fitness and health.
The formal presentation of the award took place at the SHAPE Maryland Honors & Awards Banquet in Ocean City on Nov. 15. This event is a gathering point for state leaders in education, health, and community well-being to honor those making significant contributions in these fields. SHAPE Maryland promotes healthful lifestyles through education, which Councilmember Fani-González's initiatives have notably supported by encouraging active living and mental wellness.
