In a stark reminder of the persistent issues of gun violence within educational institutions, Metro Nashville Public Schools has reported the detection of five firearms at high schools across the district, facilitated by the newly installed Evolv weapon detection systems. The latest case surfaced on November 3rd at James Lawson High School, where a 16-year-old student was found with a stolen gun, as per WSMV's report. In response to a fatal shooting earlier this year, MNPS has rolled out these detection systems, which employ artificial intelligence to enhance security and safety on campus grounds.
The deployment of Evolv systems is an ongoing process, with installations in district middle schools set to commence on October 12, stretching through to October 17, allowing ample time for the necessary training of students and staff; this action follows an incident at Antioch High School that claimed lives and spurred the district to actively seek out advanced solutions for students' protection, two cases of gun detection have already been recorded in the 2025-26 school year. According to Hometown Connect, the recent arrest at James Lawson High School occurred as the teenage student came into the school, with the Evolv system immediately alerting to the presence of a weapon.
The apprehended student, whose identification is withheld due to age, was found in possession of a pistol that had been reported stolen in a 2017 home burglary. The student now faces charges for bringing a gun onto school property and juvenile weapon possession. A search of his backpack also yielded an extended magazine and loose rounds of ammunition, revealing the potential for a situation far graver than what transpired. The incident affirmed the necessity of the detection systems. Following FOX17's report, police intervention was swift after the Evolv system detected the firearm during the student's morning entry into the school premises.
No further details on the case have been divulged immediately.
