A Port St. Lucie community was rocked by a tragic incident yesterday when a neighborly dispute escalated to violence, resulting in two fatalities and a tense hostage situation. The suspect, 62-year-old Paul Maraio, engaged in a standoff with police for over two hours after fatally shooting two men and holding a woman captive in her own home, as reported by CBS12.
Responding officers arrived around 3:15 p.m. at the scene at the 2700 block of Southeast Tropical Circle, during which residents were advised to remain indoors. Negotiation teams and a SWAT response were quickly mobilized to address the standoff, Maraio eventually released the hostage unharmed but remained barricaded inside the house. Police Chief Leo Niemczyk indicated, “It appears that there was some ongoing neighbor dispute," and something pushed the suspect over the edge, according to CBS12. The names of the slain men were withheld from immediate release.
The police utilized drones to confirm that Maraio had suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest, after which the SWAT teams entered the home and took him into custody, transferring him to a hospital in critical condition. Subsequent reports from NBC Miami confirmed that the suspect succumbed to his injuries the following day.
