
A man died last Saturday night in New Bedford after an altercation with his neighbor at a rooming house. NBC Boston reports that the incident took place at 162 Sawyer Street, where 56-year-old Curtis Pina suffered a serious forehead injury and later died at a local hospital.
New Bedford Police responded to a call about the altercation around 11:32 p.m. When they arrived, they found Pina bleeding heavily from his forehead on the third-floor landing of the rooming house, according to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office. He was taken to a hospital, where authorities later confirmed his death, according to NBC 10 WJAR.
Arirto Santiago, 38, who also lived in the home, was arrested in connection with the incident and faces charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Santiago is scheduled for arraignment today in New Bedford District Court, the district attorney’s office said. Information about Santiago’s legal representation was not immediately available.
Massachusetts State Police detectives are leading an investigation into the events that led to Pina’s death. Local police and the district attorney’s office are assisting, but further details about the altercation have not been released, according to initial reports.
