
A man with a prior conviction was arrested on Sunday after an alleged assault involving a firearm. The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Dominic Rezendes of 55 Austin St., was spotted by police officers leaving his apartment before attempting to escape into a nearby residence, ultimately being apprehended on the rear porch without further complications, as per a social media post by the City of New Bedford Police Department.
According to the police, following Rezendes' attempt to flee the authorities, a loaded 9mm Smith & Wesson handgun was found discarded, Rezendes had no license for it, adding to the charges which include breaking & entering and kidnapping, in addition to carrying the said loaded firearm, this arrest is not his first run-in with the law, with a criminal history spanning back to a 2011 shooting in Wareham for which he served a 15-year prison sentence and is currently under probation out of the New Bedford District Court.
Rezendes was taken to police headquarters after being secured by officers, facing multiple charges linked to the recent incident. The New Bedford Police are encouraging anyone with further information to come forward, assuring confidentiality through anonymous tips, which can be given by calling 508-99-CRIME or by submitting a tip via their website.
