In the Bronx, a new leaf has been turned over in the realm of children's mental health care, with the opening of a new state-funded 21-bed inpatient psychiatric facility. Operated by Montefiore Medical Center, this center sits on the campus of the New York City Children’s Center and is designed to support youth grappling with serious behavioral health issues such as severe depression, anxiety, trauma, and other acute psychiatric conditions. The Governor's Office reports the facility spans 18,300 square feet and will cater to children between the ages of 5 and 17.

The inauguration of Montefiore Einstein’s Center for Children’s Mental Health has been an incremental step in Governor Kathy Hochul's effort to build up inpatient capacity, delivering 1,000 new beds statewide since taking office. During a ceremonial event, attended also by 12-year-old Joziah and his mother who shared their personal encounters with the mental health system, Governor Hochul emphasized the commitment to enhancing care for children experiencing serious mental illnesses. She highlighted the substantial impact of new partnerships on improving health service options, as "Montefiore Einstein’s state-of-the-art Center for Children’s Mental Health represents the strong partnership we have with our community-based hospitals," according to the Governor's Office announcement.

With the addition of these 21 beds, the Bronx sees a near 31 percent increase in the borough’s capacity for child inpatient psychiatric care. This response aims to address the estimated 21 percent of children aged 5 to 17 in the Bronx diagnosed with behavioral health disorders, and illustrates a commitment to providing continued care that weaves outpatient treatment with new opportunities for specialized staff training. The project received combined funding from the state along with a private donation for Montefiore Einstein, also supported by a $6 million capital appropriation from Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and Assemblymember Michael Benedetto.

Backing this youth-focused facility, comments from local officials, Representative Gustavo Rivera and Nathalia Fernandez, praise the initiative for its potential to relieve young Bronx residents suffering from complex mental health needs. Their remarks echo the importance of such investments in securing accessible and equitable care, as "this unit will help countless young Bronxites with complex behavioral health needs," said State Senator Rivera, and it reaffirms the administration’s commitment to address the momentous task of mental health challenges faced by families, as shared by State Senator Fernandez. The project is depicted as a beacon of hope for those in darker times and an essential step in expanding the state’s mental health infrastructure, as per the Governor's Office.

Governor Hochul is expanding mental health services for youth, including 20 Youth Assertive Community Treatment teams that provide integrated, family-centered care, with two located in the Bronx. The state also supports school-based mental health clinics, with 50 operating in the Bronx, offering accessible care on campuses. These clinics, along with Home Based Crisis Intervention teams, aim to create a network that supports youth mental health in their communities.
