New Orleans is teeing up for the 52nd Annual Bayou Classic, presented by Procter & Gamble, and city officials are laying out the groundwork to ensure a smooth celebration of the famous Thanksgiving and football festivity. Set to take place from Thursday to Saturday, the weekend is packed with events, including the Thanksgiving Day Parade, Fan Fest, Beats Before Battle, Greek Show, Battle of the Bands, and the legendary football game itself. In an effort to manage the increased foot traffic and keep festivities orderly, the New Orleans Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (NOHSEP) will ramp up to a level 3 activation, with staff keeping watch all through the weekend. To support the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) during this heightened state of revelry, additional visibility and help across the event scopes will be provided by the Louisiana State Police and the National Guard.
The NOPD is tasked with traffic control, walking beats, and patrols in key areas such as the Marigny, French Quarter, and Central Business District (CBD), while it maintains normal operations elsewhere. Citizens and attendees are encouraged to be prepared for heavy vehicular and pedestrian traffic within these regions by arranging their transportation in advance to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all involved, according to the City of New Orleans.
Heads up to all those planning to navigate through New Orleans during the festivities, no-parking zones are to be implemented on Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. These zones impact key streets, including both sides of Poydras Street between South Claiborne Avenue and South Peters Street, among others, as detailed in the parade route information from the city's press release. As a part of the Bayou Classic weekend safety measures, moveable bollards will be deployed, enhancing the French Quarter Exterior and Interior Closure, set to be effective nightly on Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m., as mentioned in the same news.
