A call about an intoxicated woman trying to leave a Destrehan-area home allegedly turned into a brief pursuit and a deputy being hit by a vehicle. Authorities say 26-year-old Savanna Magee was arrested after investigators accused her of reversing into a St. Tammany Parish sheriff’s deputy near Slidell.
Deputies were dispatched to the 100 block of Windward Passage regarding a woman who was reportedly intoxicated and attempting to leave in a vehicle, according to WDSU. Deputies briefly pursued Magee’s vehicle, which stopped near Oak Harbor Boulevard and Oak Court, where authorities say she put the vehicle in reverse while trying to flee and struck a deputy.
Deputy Treated For Minor Injuries
The deputy was treated at the scene for minor injuries before being taken to a local hospital for further evaluation as a precaution, WDSU reported. Authorities took Magee into custody, though investigators also accuse her of resisting arrest.
WDSU reports that Magee is expected to be booked on counts including attempted murder of a police officer, driving while impaired, unauthorized use of a movable, simple battery and resisting arrest. The allegations have not been tested in court, and an arrest is not a conviction.
Attempt Charge Could Bring Enhanced Penalties
Louisiana law defines an attempt as conduct done with specific intent that tends directly toward committing a crime, and provides enhanced sentencing for an attempt against a peace officer performing lawful duties. Under the state statute, that type of attempt can carry 20 to 50 years at hard labor without parole, probation or suspension when the underlying offense is punishable by death or life imprisonment, according to the Louisiana Legislature.
The final charges and potential penalties will depend on the case prosecutors bring and how the allegations proceed in court.
