A New Orleans man has been sentenced to over 14 years in prison following a string of drug distribution charges, primarily involving methamphetamine and fentanyl. Alton Tumblin, 44, faced a federal judge on Wednesday, November 19, receiving 175 months behind bars. It was the result of a plea on multiple counts linked to drug trafficking, as confirmed by the U.S. Attorney's Office press release.
According to details from the same press release, Tumblin distributed significant quantities of methamphetamine, more than 50 grams, on three different occasions to undercover agents. These instances occurred on August 7, 2023, August 9, 2023, and August 16, 2023. Additionally, on the first of these dates, Tumblin also distributed a quantity of fentanyl, a powerful and often deadly opioid.
The case against Tumblin was a part of "Operation Big Easy," an initiative aimed at curbing firearm-related crimes and narcotics trafficking in New Orleans. Using the National Integrated Ballistics Information Network (NIBIN), law enforcement agencies were able to connect data points of shootings and homicides with individuals involved in criminal activities. The time frame for this particular operation was from August 1, 2023, to January 31, 2023.
This collaborative law enforcement effort included the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the New Orleans Police Department, and the Louisiana State Police. Rachel Cassagne, of the Narcotics Unit, took on the prosecution duties. The sentence also comes with a five-year term of supervised release after Tumblin's prison term, and he is obliged to pay a $400 mandatory special assessment fee, as mentioned in the same press release.
