The City of Norman's Administrative Offices will be pulling the shutters down for the Thanksgiving holiday this year on November 27 and 28, with citizens having to adjust their schedules accordingly. In an announcement made yesterday, the city laid out the altered timetable for its various services during the festive period, a matter of practical information for locals planning their holiday week. For those with trash piling up or a need to get somewhere on the city bus, here's what you need to know.
The city's Solid Waste Division will take a break from collecting your refuse on Thanksgiving Day. This means if your garbage, yard waste, or recycling is usually picked up on Thursday, you'll have to wait until Friday, November 28, to roll your bins to the curb. And for the Friday crowd, your waste won't magically disappear until Saturday, November 29. If you need to offload some compost or make a trip to the Transfer Station, these facilities will be closed on the holiday but will reopen the following day with normal hours, according to the City of Norman's release.
Transit services will be experiencing a pause, too. EMBARK Norman is set to cease operations on Thanksgiving Day. But don't fret just yet, as Norman On-Demand will keep to its regular schedule, ensuring you're not completely stranded.
Recreation seekers will also find doors closed at city-run facilities during the holiday. Both the recreation centers and Westwood Golf and Tennis will not be frequented with the sound of athletic endeavors on Thursday, but will be back to business as usual on Friday. For those who make a routine of visiting the Young Family Athletic Center or sneaking in a session at the Adult Wellness and Education Center, the centers will bar entrance on Thanksgiving Day, and the latter will fold up early at 3 p.m. the Wednesday prior, remaining off-limits through Friday, as per the City of Norman's release.
Norman Animal Welfare and the NPD Records Division will be closed on Thursday and Friday, potentially delaying services. Normal operations will resume on December 2. Residents can visit Normanok.gov for updates and safety tips. Questions regarding schedule changes can be directed to Solid Waste at 405-329-1023 or Parks & Recreation at 405-366-5472.
