An incident involving two North Charleston City Council members, Michael Brown Jr. and Nefertiti Brown, is under investigation by Salt Lake City police following an altercation at a Utah bar. CountOn2 reports that the alleged confrontation took place late Friday night, November 21, at The Lake Effect bar while the council members were attending the National League of Cities conference.
Details surfaced after Brown Jr. reported being assaulted by an unidentified woman whom he later implied was Councilwoman Nefertiti Brown, who also filed a report alleging she defended herself when physically attacked by Brown Jr. Live 5 News reported the councilwoman's statement, “I fought to defend myself in regards to him physically attacking me.” The two did not press charges against each other; Brown Jr. indicated his report was for insurance reasons, and no immediate details were provided on the woman's motivations for filing her report.
At a council meeting following the incident, the tensions were palpable as each council member delivered personal statements. "I struggled with reporting this issue due to being assaulted by someone I called a friend," Michael Brown Jr. recounted in his speech, as per ABC News 4, emphasizing his non-retaliatory response rooted in faith. Nefertiti Brown described suffering physical marks in the scuffle and expressed her resolve to maintain focus on her duties as a council member despite the troubling occurrence, both of which are according to ABC News 4.
