Starting November 3, maintenance crews will be out and about taking care of the public warning siren system. According to a release from the Y-12 National Security Complex, these sirens are a key part of the safety protocols, designed to keep the community informed in the event of an emergency that might spill beyond the confines of the site.

It's not every day you have to think about the what-ifs of a national security complex emergency, but that's why these tests are necessary. The Y-12 team wants to make sure that should an actual incident occur, everyone can be swiftly alerted. As maintenance is performed throughout the week, the sirens will be activated individually for short periods according to the Y-12 National Security Complex press release.

Sirens around the Y-12 National Security Complex are set to sound a three-minute alert if there’s a real threat. If you hear it, it’s not a drill, and you should follow emergency instructions, which are available on the Y-12 National Security Complex website.
