A multi-agency police chase and gunfire exchange resulted in injuries to an officer and the arrest of a suspect in Tangipahoa Parish early on November 12. According to an update from the Louisiana State Police, the incident began just before 3:00 a.m. when a Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Deputy tried to pull over a 2016 Chevrolet Trax driven by Trey Ramey, 34, of Brusly, on the grounds of an equipment violation.
During the traffic stop on Highway 51, Ramey decided to quickly flee, causing a pursuit that dramatically escalated. Confirming details from the initial report, Ramey fired multiple shots at pursuing officers, hitting an Independence Police Department officer. In pursuing Ramey, an officer from the Tickfaw Police Department exchanged gunfire with him.
After the shootout, Ramey reportedly carjacked a 2015 Toyota Camry and continued to flee down Highway 51. Shortly thereafter, the stolen vehicle was crashed and abandoned, and Ramey took off on foot into a wooded area. During this chain of events, it was confirmed that a Louisiana State Trooper also discharged their service weapon. Ramey was apprehended and is currently receiving medical treatment at a local hospital for injuries sustained during the encounter.
As for Ramey's legal troubles, investigators found that he had active warrants for a range of offenses, including hit and run and violating public records. "Upon release from the hospital, Ramey will be booked on the warrants and further charges stemming from the incident," per the Louisiana State Police's statement. The condition of the injured officers has not been disclosed, but it has been made known that both were transported to local hospitals for treatment. To fully investigate this event, the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab is currently processing the scene alongside the Force Investigation Unit (FIU) personnel.
This unfolding story touches upon the perilous intersection of law enforcement's duty to maintain public safety and the unpredictable dangers faced while on duty. The Louisiana State Police has pledged to offer updates in collaboration with the Tangipahoa Parish District Attorney’s Office as their investigation proceeds.
