Tensions escalated in Monticello this past Tuesday when Wright County Sheriff's deputies engaged in a confrontation, leading to an officer-involved shooting. The situation commenced at 8:56 p.m. on the 900 Block of Golf Course Road, with deputies responding to a 9-1-1 call about a man brandishing a large knife and causing a disturbance in the street. According to a statement from the Wright County Sheriff's Office, the deputies encountered the knife-wielding individual who failed to comply with orders to stop and surrender the weapon.
Efforts to subdue the individual took a drastic turn when a Taser was used, unsuccessfully attempting to neutralize the threat. A deputy subsequently discharged their firearm, striking the male. Following the shooting, the individual was taken into custody and promptly received first aid before being transported to North Memorial Health in Robbinsdale. The individual is currently reported to be in stable condition.
The deputies involved in the incident, none of whom sustained physical injuries, have been placed on critical incident leave. This is a standard procedural response following an officer-involved shooting. In the interest of transparency, it should be noted that body cameras were activated and worn by the deputies during the incident.
Further details on the case are scarce as the investigation has been taken over by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA). The BCA is now the primary contact for any inquiries related to the incident, as the Sheriff's Office is not releasing any additional information at this current juncture. Individuals seeking more insights or updates are to be directed to approach the BCA to fully understand the ongoing situation.
