Ogden-Hinckley Airport recently celebrated the opening of its $5 million terminal expansion, an upgrade city leaders anticipate will enhance the passenger experience and draw in more commercial services to northern Utah. Despite the excitement, the expansion has brought to light ongoing safety concerns, following several crashes in the vicinity over recent years. Brian Condie, the airport's director, mentioned in a KUTV report that unforeseen issues related to original construction in the 1940s pushed the cost slightly over the initial $4.4 million estimate.
The terminal project, primarily funded by federal aviation taxes, includes an indoor baggage claim, expanded restrooms, and updated drop-off lanes. However, some have questioned whether enough funds have been allocated to sufficiently address airfield safety concerns. Mayor Ben Nadolski emphasized the city's commitment to safety, stating to KUTV, "We are never going to compromise safety in this airport ever... Safety is always the standard."
Looking toward future growth and especially the 2034 Winter Olympics, the airport has already shifted its gaze towards further improvements. A new control tower and the potential introduction of electric vertical takeoff and landing crafts (eVTOLs) to ferry Olympic spectators are on the horizon. "We're looking at getting 30 or 40 of them from here up to the venue so we get people off the road," Condie told KSL. These eVTOLs are part of Ogden's strategic planning to manage the anticipated traffic during the Olympics.
The airport expansion is viewed as a "fresh start" by city officials, with the federally funded project also addressing the need to upgrade the airport's commercial runway. As Ogden Mayor Ben Nadolski put it in a statement to FOX13, the airport will definitely play a pivotal role during the Olympics, with overflow traffic from Salt Lake City International expected. The city's foresight to appropriately prepare for the influx of international visitors speaks to Ogden's broader vision of growth and resourcefulness.
