In the face of the federal government shutdown affecting Oklahoma residents, local metro restaurants are stepping up to support those who have lost access to their SNAP benefits. Among them, Taquitos Feliz and Oliver’s Pizzeria are offering free meals to families and individuals struggling to secure food for their children.
According to an interview with KFOR, Taquitos Feliz owner Roberto Brambila is providing full, free meals to anyone coming in with an EBT card and at least one child. Despite this surge in patronage not translating into profits, Brambila's enthusiasm to help is evident. "I love helping people out. That’s—I mean, that’s what I love to do," he stated, reaffirming his dedication to the community during these times.
In a similar display of community support, Oliver’s Pizzeria announced a giveaway of large, one-topping pizzas to SNAP cardholders. The giveaway, intended to make sure Oklahomans could enjoy a hot meal, was detailed in a statement obtained by KOCO. "We're part of this community, and we want to support the people who support us," the Oliver's management team expressed. The pizzeria is also extending its generosity to veterans and active service members on Veterans Day, offering free pizzas as a token of appreciation for their service.
The situation has prompted other local eateries, such as Taco Casa, to offer similar acts of kindness throughout the metro area, accepting EBT cards at registers for gratis meals for affected children. According to a report by News 9, Oliver's Pizzeria prepared over 500 pounds of dough to accommodate the expected turnout on their giveaway days, highlighting the scale of these charitable efforts.
While the shutdown brings significant hardship and political strife, Oklahoma businesses like Taquitos Feliz and Oliver’s Pizzeria embody a spirit of unity and humanity. Their actions resonate with the sentiment voiced by regular customer Gil Torres at Taquitos Feliz, "This isn’t a time to be political. It’s a time to be human. And let’s help our fellow humans out," as he contributed to Brambila's efforts. These establishments are not only providing sustenance but also instilling hope and solidarity within the community, according to a statement obtained by KFOR.
