Oklahomans who depend on food assistance received news that partial Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits will be distributed within the next 24 hours. As reported by NewsOn6, the Oklahoma Department of Human Services (OKDHS) has obtained federal approval to issue the payments for November after the recent government shutdown, which began on October 1.
The partial benefits, a figure reportedly set at 65% by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), will vary per household based on federal guidelines. Unfortunately, due to eligibility restrictions informed by the USDA, some may not receive any benefits. "Oklahomans stepped up, and they continue to do so," said Gov. Kevin Stitt, acknowledging the communal effort during the shutdown. The Oklahoma Voice noted that more than 680,000 Oklahomans are part of the SNAP program, which underscores the importance of these benefits to a significant portion of the state's population.
Eligibility and distribution processes are out of the hands of the state department, as the OKDHS does not set individual benefit levels. "We know people are counting on this support, and our teams have been working around the clock to make sure Oklahomans can put food on the table,” commented Sondra Shelby, Director of Adult & Family Services at OKDHS, according to an interview with KFOR. SNAP recipients are assured that they need not take any action to access these benefits, as they are set to be automatically issued.
For those requiring case status information or wanting to check their Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) balances, resources are available via the 'ConnectEBT' app and website. To expedite relief throughout this transitional phase, OKDHS has already finished the required system work, ensuring the benefits could be rolled out as swiftly as Tuesday. In closing his statement, which exemplifies the collective spirit during these challenging times, Gov. Stitt expressed pride over the dedicated effort to uphold what he deems the "Oklahoma Standard," reports NewsOn6.
