Last Saturday, Lenoir City played host to a gathering that spotlighted some of the brightest minds from Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Managed by UT-Battelle for the Department of Energy, the lab's annual Awards Night recognized notable contributions in various fields, such as science and technology, operations, and community engagement. In a statement obtained by ORNL, ORNL Director Stephen Streiffer commended the Director’s Award winners for their dedication to the institution's mission and impact on both national security and scientific innovation.

Among the evening's celebrated achievements, Brenden Ortiz, in particular, was honored with the Director's Award for Outstanding Individual Accomplishment in Science & Technology. ORNL Director Stephen Streiffer said, "Each awardee exemplifies a dedication to the lab’s important mission and a commitment to our core value of impact." Ortiz's work on kagome metals has been met with no small measure of acclaim, featuring in 16 high-impact publications and collaborations that span across several academic institutions.

Not to be overshadowed, the Polyglot Detection Team took home the Director’s Award for Outstanding Team Accomplishment for their Polyvore suite. This AI-driven arsenal is capable of detecting and neutralizing polyglot files, a particularly sneaky kind of malware that can dodge even the most sophisticated machine learning detectors. The technology's subsequent transfer to both government and commercial entities has notably bolstered national cybersecurity efforts.

An ambitious two-year project to upgrade ORNL's business systems also received accolades. The ORNL ERP S/4HANA Upgrade team, having managed to transition to the SAP S/4HANA platform under budget and on schedule, garnered the Director’s Award for Outstanding Team Accomplishment, according to ORNL. Responsible for improving core operations like finance, procurement, and human resources, the team members come from a cross-section of ORNL's directorates, proving that collaborative efforts are key to achieving the DOE's mission-critical objectives.

UT-Battelle's stewardship of ORNL underscores the lab's commitment to excellence and the betterment of society through scientific discovery. The Office of Science, as the premier funder of physical sciences research in the US, aims to tackle some of the most challenging issues of our era. With this annual celebration of achievement, ORNL not only honors its exemplary staff but also reaffirms its significant impact on both Tennessee and the broader national landscape.
