Paul Mallory, co-founder of Portland’s Higgins Restaurant, has died at the age of 71, according to the restaurant’s team. Open since 1994, the restaurant noted his contributions as a dedicated partner, highlighting his humor, intelligence, and loyalty in helping establish Higgins as a longstanding part of the downtown dining scene.
Higgins is known for its farm-to-table menu featuring Oregon produce and for supporting local breweries and wineries. Earlier this year, the co-owners reported that the restaurant was experiencing financial difficulties due to decreased tourism and high downtown office vacancies. Their appeal led to increased reservations from patrons, as per Oregon Live.
Greg Mallory, co-owner of Higgins, announced on Instagram that his friend and business partner, Paul Mallory, had passed away. He described Paul as "the quiet force behind so much of what made Higgins what it is," noting that he had been dedicated to the restaurant from its inception, according to KOIN 6 News.
Plans to honor Paul Mallory’s legacy are still being finalized and will be shared in the near future. Reflecting on Higgins, Greg Mallory told KOIN 6 News, "If you ever shared a meal here, raised a glass at the bar, or felt welcome within our walls, then you’ve felt Paul’s presence. His DNA is forever a part of Higgins." The community will have opportunities in the coming days to acknowledge his contributions to the restaurant and its operations.
