A pedestrian has died after being struck by a Metra train in Chicago's Lawn neighborhood, with the incident taking place near the Wrightwood Metra Station, WGN-TV reports. According to a Metra spokesperson, the collision occurred around 7:30 p.m. at the intersection of West 74th Street and South Western Avenue, with train services expected to be halted for several hours thereafter.
While information about the deceased pedestrian remains scarce at this time, ongoing investigations have prompted suspension of local Metra lines until about 10 to 10:30 p.m. that same evening which caused inconvenience among commuters but ensured the safety of ongoing assessments and emergency responses.
In a separate incident detailed by FOX 32 Chicago, another pedestrian was hit by a Metra train close to the Aurora station on Monday afternoon. Metra's spokesperson confirmed that Metra police were on the scene and described how the pedestrian walked into the side of the moving train as it approached the station.
Though the collision near the Aurora station was not fatal, the condition of the pedestrian hit remained unknown, and service disruptions followed this event as well, with at least one train to Chicago experiencing delays around 1:30 p.m. and by 6:20 p.m., the BNSF line resumed operation but with delays approximating 45 minutes which Metra was actively working to resolve for their patrons who depend on their schedule for daily travels.
These consecutive accidents involving Metra trains and pedestrians have raised concerns among Chicago's transit system users, but fuller details on both incidents will only become apparent once further investigations by the authorities, including the Cook County Coroner’s Office, conclude. Updates are expected as the investigations progress and new information is disclosed.
