On November 4, the Peoria City Council greenlit a deal with Western Maricopa Education Center (West-MEC) that will bring a new skilled education center to the Vistancia area. According to a recent announcement, this move is part of the Council's commitment to increase educational opportunities locally.
Following the nod of approval from voters in the bond election, as indicated in the announcement, West-MEC is set to establish a medical and other Career and Technical Education-focused campus on a five-to-seven-acre stretch within FIVE NORTH at Vistancia. Mayor Jason Beck told the publication that a skilled workforce is the backbone of the city's long-term plans to lure in jobs and enhance revenues.
The burgeoning partnership between West-MEC and the City of Peoria aims to make accessible high-quality career and technical education accessible. "West-MEC is proud to partner with the City of Peoria to expand access to high-quality career and technical education,” West-MEC Superintendent Dr. Scott Spurgeon said in a statement obtained by the publication. This collaboration underpins their mutual endeavor to prepare students for viable, in-demand careers, with an eye on nourishing strong communities and thriving economies.
Peoria's collaboration with West-MEC is deepening, marked by a second planned site—the Vistancia complex. In February 2025, an agreement approved by the City Council allowed West-MEC to construct a Career and Technical (CTE) campus on city-owned land, as detailed by a West-MEC report for another location at 95th and Peoria Avenues.
Operating across a substantial swath of Arizona's northern and western Phoenix Metropolitan area, West-MEC is known for its excellence in Career and Technical Education (CTE), providing hands-on training, college credits, and industry-recognized credentials. Alongside its support to young learners from 49 high schools, West-MEC also extends its offerings to adult education programs, opening doors for learners of all ages to fulfill their career aspirations. More about their innovative approach towards workforce development and education is available at West-MEC's website.
