Hikers in Phoenix will have to adjust their plans as the popular Echo Canyon Trail at Camelback Mountain remains closed due to recent geological concerns. Following a period of storms in mid-October that prompted investigations into possible erosion, City officials have identified three unstable boulders posing potential safety risks to visitors. According to a press release from the City of Phoenix, work to stabilize and eliminate these hazards is set to commence this week.
The safety measures, developed by a team of geotechnical and civil engineers, include coring holes into each of the boulders and injecting them with an expanding grout. This process, designed to fragment the boulders in a controlled manner, aims to minimize the impact on the surrounding environment. "We understand how important Echo Canyon is to residents and visitors alike," Cynthia Aguilar, Parks and Recreation Director, told the City of Phoenix's newroom. "We’re taking a careful, methodical approach to restore Echo Canyon, and we appreciate the community’s patience while we ensure the trail is safe again."
While the trail is closed, the Parks and Recreation Department is seizing the opportunity to simultaneously carry out other improvements at the trailhead. These updates will include renovations to restrooms and upkeep of the parking lot. By executing these enhancements in tandem with the trail safety measures, the department aims to circumvent future closures and expedite the trail's reopening.
Residents looking to lace up their hiking boots in the meantime can explore alternate trails such as Cholla Trail on Camelback Mountain, Piestewa Peak, and others within the area. The Parks and Recreation Department encourages outdoor enthusiasts to visit popular sites like North Mountain, Dreamy Draw, Lookout Mountain, and South Mountain Park and Preserve.
