Over the weekend, protesters gathered in Pompano Beach to denounce recent U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids and the reported conditions in immigration detention centers. According to NBC Miami, dozens of demonstrators assembled outside the Broward Transitional Center as part of the national Disappeared in America Weekend of Action, which highlights the struggles of detained immigrants and the effects of federal enforcement on communities.
Among those affected is Brenda Escobar, whose husband, Yorlih Escobar-Murillo from Honduras, has been detained at the Broward Transitional Center since his 2021 arrest for driving without a license. NBC Miami reported that Brenda, who recently gave birth and is recovering from a C-section, has pleaded for her husband’s release so he can assist their family, but ICE has not responded to inquiries regarding his case.
Tap Into Pompano Beach noted that the protest was part of a larger national campaign using social media to organize rallies demanding transparency and accountability within the immigration system. The Pompano Beach event brought together immigrant-rights advocates and faith-based groups calling for improvements to detention conditions and an end to harmful enforcement practices.
The demonstration forms part of a growing national movement urging greater scrutiny of ICE’s operations and the human toll of its policies.
