A fatal officer-involved shooting occurred in Redwood City yesterday when police responded to a call about a man firing a gun into the sidewalk. The Redwood City Police Department, via a press release, reported that 48-year-old resident Jose Reynaldo Lombera was located using a drone after he fled the scene on foot.
Upon establishing a perimeter in the area of Hazel Avenue, officers who were equipped with both lethal and non-lethal weapons attempted to communicate with Lombera. According to the department's statement, Lombera then pointed a firearm at the officers, which prompted them to discharge their weapons. The suspect was struck and given immediate medical attention at the scene before being transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The incident, which did not result in any other reported injuries, has led to the involved officers being placed on administrative leave, which is a standard procedure in officer-involved shootings. The multi-agency investigation into the shooting is ongoing and is being led by the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office, as per typical protocol.
