An officer-involved shooting was reported in the Tenderloin District, following an incident with an aggressive dog and its owner yesterday. According to a statement from the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD), police responded to a call near Market and O’Farrell streets at around 4:27 PM, where a large off-leash dog had bitten an individual.
The situation escalated when SFPD officers attempted to readily secure the dog and detain the male subject accompanying it. During the encounter, an officer discharged their weapon. The dog fled but returned shortly afterwards, biting one of the responding officers, who subsequently received medical treatment and was released at the scene. The man who was with the dog was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while the initial dog bite victim made his own way for medical attention.
In the wake of the incident, Animal Care and Control (ACC) took custody of the dog. The officer-involved shooting has prompted several entities to conduct investigations, including the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office, the SFPD’s Investigative Services Division (ISD), Internal Affairs Division (IAD), and the Department of Police Accountability (DPA), as detailed in the SFPD's statement.
As investigations continue, SFPD has pledged to hold a town hall meeting within ten days to discuss the circumstances surrounding the shooting, maintaining a stance on transparency and accountability. The public is asked to provide any further information by contacting the SFPD at 1-415-575-4444 or by sending a text to TIP411, starting the message with 'SFPD'.
