Following the Los Angeles Dodgers' climactic World Series victory over the Toronto Blue Jays, the City of Angels saw a mixture of celebrations and tumult, which resulted in multiple arrests. NBC Los Angeles reported that seven people were detained on various charges amid the revelry.
The Los Angeles Police Department had to temporarily intensify its presence, initiating a Tactical Alert around 5:45 p.m. Saturday, an anticipation of post-game festivities. Engulfing the streets, fans didn't hesitate to make their joy known as fireworks illuminated the night sky moments after the game's end. However, this jubilation turned to disorder in certain areas, leading to LAPD officers firing less-than-lethal rounds to disperse the crowds, as detailed by CBS LA.
Among the arrests, one individual faced charges for battery of a peace officer, and another was suspected of harming an animal after allegedly colliding her bicycle with a police horse. Three other individuals were taken into custody for suspected felony vandalism to a Metro bus, and police also reported arresting someone for failing to disperse, as well as another for possession of fireworks, according to FOX LA.
The measures extended to street closures around LA Live to attempt to manage the throngs. Dispersal orders were necessary at multiple locations, including Chick Hearn Court and 11th Street, and Sunset Boulevard and Echo Park Avenue. At one stage, law enforcement was authorized to use tear gas to clear out a non-compliant crowd that was allegedly setting off "industrial-sized fireworks," highlighting the gravity of the situation, as shared by NBC Los Angeles.
LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell, in a statement obtained by CBS LA, commented on the incidents of vandalism and urged fans to celebrate responsibly ahead of the championship parade and event at Dodger Stadium scheduled for Monday. While the finalization of arrest numbers is still pending, this year's incidents seem toned down compared to the previous year's celebrations, where more arrests were made and significant property damage, including a bus being set ablaze, was reported.
