The San José Police Department reported via social media that two victims were discovered and transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. The police urged the public to stay away from the area while they worked to ensure everyone's safety. "This shooting appears to be an isolated incident and NOT an active shooter," they stated, noting the time of occurrence at approximately 5:40 PM.

However, officers are evacuating and clearing the mall to confirm there is no ongoing threat to public safety.

Following the incident, officers initiated a meticulous process to methodically evacuate and clear the mall, ensuring there was no further threat to public safety. During this security sweep, a counter was tragically added to the injured list; a 16-year-old girl, alongside the previously mentioned adult male and female, was taken to receive medical care. The San José Police Department's media relations post underlined that traffic in the vicinity was significantly affected and advised the community to continue avoiding the area.
The incident stemmed from a confrontation between two individuals outside of the Macy's on the mall's second floor, which escalated into gunfire. "We can say for a matter of fact that this was not unsuspected shoppers that were targeted, this was an isolated incident with two individuals, and unfortunately two others were injured. And this shouldn't stop people from enjoying their holiday," Sgt. Jorge Garibay of the San Jose Police Department told ABC7 News. The police believe only one suspect was involved, and a search for the individual is underway.
