After three decades of smoke, sauce and late-night crowds, Smoke Daddy's original Wicker Park restaurant is preparing for its final service. The Division Street staple will close on January 4, 2026, with owners planning to turn the space into a new restaurant concept and to offer many Wicker Park employees jobs elsewhere in the company.

As reported by Block Club Chicago, 4 Star Restaurant Group, which took over the Wicker Park Smoke Daddy in 2004, announced the closure and said it will roll out a series of specials in the lead-up to the last day. Company representatives told the outlet that staff at the Wicker Park location are being offered roles at other 4 Star restaurants, and that there will be events building up to closing day.

Wrigleyville outpost will remain open

Fans will still be able to get their Smoke Daddy fix on the North Side. The brand's second location inside Hotel Zachary, across from Wrigley Field, will remain open, according to the company site.

The Wrigleyville restaurant opened in 2018 and was designed as a game-day-friendly companion to the original, according to Eater Chicago.

Division Street staple for three decades

The original Smoke Daddy opened on Division Street in 1994 and built a reputation on smoky ribs, live blues, and crowds that lingered late into the night. That opening date appears on longstanding listings and review pages, underscoring how the spot helped anchor this stretch of Division for three decades. One record of the restaurant's history is preserved on TripAdvisor.

Promotions, tailgate send-off and a mystery new concept

Management told Block Club Chicago it will run promotions over the coming months and cap the run with a closing-day tailgate before the Bears - Lions game. The send-off is set to include $1 shots, $1 appetizers and giveaways.

The company also plans to convert the Wicker Park space into a new restaurant, although officials have not yet shared details about the concept or the timeline.

What it says about Wicker Park's restaurant churn

Neighborhood restaurants across Chicago have been hit by a wave of closures and reshuffling this year as operators respond to rising costs and shifting customer habits. Coverage of recent shutdowns has highlighted the churn on commercial strips that once felt almost untouchable, and it helps explain why some groups are choosing to repurpose long-running spaces instead of keeping older concepts going. Axios chronicled several notable Chicago-area closures earlier this fall in its local coverage.

For now, the Wrigleyville Smoke Daddy remains open, and reservations and updates are available through the restaurant group. For more on the Wicker Park closure and the company's statement, see 4 Star Restaurant Group.
