In a tragic turn of events in Stockbridge, a son has been charged with the murder of his mother, after her body was discovered on Monday evening. Desmond Riley, 49, is facing malice murder charges in connection to the death of 75-year-old Dianna Cleveland. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, Stockbridge Police Department responded to reports of a suspicious person at a residence on Club Drive, where they found Riley standing in the front yard who stated his mother was dead inside.
The responding officers entered the home to find Cleveland deceased, having suffered multiple stab wounds. The Henry County Jail records reflect that Riley has been booked on charges including malice murder, and obstruction of an officer. In a previous altercation, Riley was arrested in Augusta for violence involving his brother and resisting arrest, hinting at a troubled history. Police cordoned off the house around 10 p.m. Monday, where detectives continued their investigation into the morning, according to Atlanta News First.
The community has expressed shock and sorrow over the incident, with Joyce Scott, a friend of the victim, sharing her disbelief. "I'm just really horribly shocked at what has happened and what has transpired. But I did know that her son... She was trying her best to get help for him and, he would do things like walk around the neighborhood and bang on the doors," Scott told FOX 5 Atlanta. She remembered Cleveland fondly, adding, "She was really funny. And I'm going to miss her a lot. I really am, because I really like Dianna. She was really sweet."
The case is now in the hands of the district attorney's office for prosecution, as confirmed by the Stockbridge Police Department. Further developments will depend on the findings of the ongoing investigation and the subsequent legal proceedings.
