Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger announced that a Special Election is set for December 9, for Georgia House District 121. The election follows the resignation of former Representative Marcus Wiedower, prompting the need for a successor in Clarke and Oconee Counties, as per the county's announcement.
Prospective candidates looking to fill the vacancy have a narrow window for qualification, according to the notice from the Athens-Clarke County Elections Department. Interested parties must file their paperwork and pay the $400 qualifying fee, starting tomorrow and ending November 10. The hours for qualifying begin at 9:00 AM on the first day and conclude at 1:00 PM on the final day, outlining a critical timeline for potential entrants into the race.
In terms of voter participation, the last day to register to vote for the Special Election, is Monday, November 10, as stipulated by the Secretary of State's notice. This provides a cutoff for residents of Georgia House District 121 who wish to have a say in who their next representative will be. Moreover, the notice points out that in-person absentee voting will commence on Monday, November 17, offering an advance opportunity for the electorate to cast their ballots.
The office emphasized the specific eligibility for voting in this election, stating, "Only residents of Georgia House District 121 may vote in this election." They also issued a reminder that not all residents of Athens-Clarke County are included within this district, directing individuals to the Georgia My Voter Page to determine their voter eligibility, and residency status in relation to District 121, as noted by the Athens-Clarke County Unified Government.
In the event that no candidate secures a majority of the vote, a Special Runoff Election has been scheduled for January 6, 2026, ensuring that a conclusive decision is reached no matter the outcome of the initial round of voting.
