A recent operation involving the Springfield Police Department's Special Victims Unit (SVU) and Firearms Investigation Unit (FIU) has led to the arrest of 36-year-old Steven Santiago on multiple firearms and violence-related charges. In a social media update, the Springfield Police Department reported the operation, which spanned from October 30 to October 31, unveiled Santiago's involvement in a firearm-armed kidnapping and domestic violence, alongside an active warrant for unrelated charges.
Detectives from SVU, directed by Captain Trent Duda, initiated the investigation following suspicions of domestic violence by Santiago; parallelly FIU detectives, under Sergeant Evan Donermeyer, responded to tips about Santiago's participation in a separate kidnapping incident, both incidents involved two different known victims, and during the late hours of October 31, they located Santiago and a loaded firearm with loose ammunition was also recovered from his person, he struggled against the officers' attempts at apprehension, engaging in violent conduct by biting one Detective and attempts to bite another, inflicting damage upon a police cruiser; Santiago confessed to the use of PCP at the time of his arrest.
After Santiago's initial apprehension, a continued investigation by FIU on November 1 led to the discovery of additional weaponry, including two loaded firearms—one being a large-capacity weapon—and various magazines capable of holding a significant number of rounds, these findings were sourced from a storage unit Santiago had in the city's North End, to which detectives gained lawful entry based on incriminating intelligence.
Steven Santiago now faces a lineup of serious charges as outlined by the police; his charges include Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License, Firearm-Armed Kidnapping, and Assault & Battery on a Police Officer, among other allegations; following his arraignment last Tuesday, he has been detained without the option of bail pending a hearing to determine the potential danger he poses, and an assortment of additional charges have been requested post-seizure of the firearms discovered in the storage unit.
