In an effort to improve public safety during the holiday season, the Sheriff's Office has reignited its annual Holiday Ride Home Program. According to a social media post from the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office, the initiative runs from Thanksgiving Day through January 2, extending a lifeline to residents who may have indulged too heavily in celebration.

Sheriff James Pohlmann encourages locals to make a simple phone call to (504) 271-2501 to get a no-questions-asked courtesy ride home from a deputy. This service is not just a kind act, but a proactive measure aimed at reducing the incidence of drinking and driving and the subsequent injuries they may cause. "It is so simple and it could save your life or the life of someone you might injure in a traffic accident," Sheriff Pohlmann said. Nevertheless, the program has boundaries; residents will only be transported to their homes in St. Bernard or, if outside the parish, to a Sheriff’s substation, according to the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office.

The sheriff was clear that the program's goal is straightforward – to prevent potential driving under the influence (DUI) incidents. "We don’t want to arrest you for driving while intoxicated or another impairment," Sheriff Pohlmann said. "So, instead of getting behind the wheel if you are impaired, just give us a call, and we will pick you up and give you a ride." The deputies will not provide rides to other parties, bars, or nightclubs, ensuring the service is strictly used for safe home transportation, as stated on the SBSO's post.

Commencing in 1986, this St. Bernard Parish tradition has the distinction of being the initial setup of its kind in the New Orleans area and has annually served roughly two dozen people, indicative of the community's appreciation and utilization of such programs. The sheriff's office has taken to its social platforms, including Facebook, to spread the word of this commendable service by employing hashtags like #KeepingStBernardSafe and #DontDrinkAndDrive. The Holiday Ride Home Program reflects a commitment to community care and the pursuit of responsible celebration practices.
