An investigation is ongoing at Wartburg Central Middle School after a student was hospitalized due to an assault by another student yesterday afternoon. WVLT News reported that the incident occurred around 1:10 p.m., resulting in the victim sustaining serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office was involved in a search for the assailant, who fled the scene. Without causing any incidents, they apprehended the other student after several hours, as stated by 6 News. Pending the outcome of the investigation, the student suspect has been detained at a juvenile facility.
Despite the unsettling events, students at Wartburg Middle School were dismissed on their usual schedule thanks to the combined efforts of local authorities and school administrators, according to the WBIR news. In a show of appreciation, the Sheriff's Office offered a "heartfelt thank you to all that assisted as we dealt with this tragic and troubling situation," as mentioned in 6 News.
In response to the assault, Jamie Pemberton, Morgan County Director of Schools, reassured the community, noting, "At this time, there is no continued threat to students or staff," in a statement obtained by WVLT News.
