Driving through Summerhaven will be a bit of a puzzle for the next several months as road work leads to intermittent closures on Sabino Canyon Park Road. The Pima County website announced that starting Monday, Nov. 10, and continuing through Saturday, Nov. 15, there will be closures from 6 a.m. through 4 p.m. between Retreat Road and N. Middle Sabino Road. While constructing a new culvert and making other roadway improvements, the road will be intermittently closed, and this pattern is expected to continue until May 2026.
Intricately tied to the improvement project for Sabino Canyon Park and Marshall Gulch, these disruptions mandate drivers to navigate a bypass route. A detour along N. Middle Sabino Road to Retreat Road will open Marshall Gulch's gates. According to Pima County's announcement, local traffic access for Carter Canyon and Mint Springs Trail will be miraculously provided when the detour is operational.
Officials are asking travelers to be patient on their commutes and to respect the traffic control measures in place. When the closures are in effect, additional travel time should be considered. The Pima County release also advised that construction times may shift due to the unpredictable Arizona elements or mechanical hiccups.
