The Florida Highway Patrol reported that a collision involving three vehicles occurred at approximately 9:50 p.m. east of 87th Drive, according to the Lake City Reporter. The crash resulted in the death of a 76-year-old Lake City woman and two girls, aged 8 and 6, all occupants of the same vehicle.
According to First Coast News, the accident involved a Dodge Ram pickup traveling westbound, driven by a 33-year-old Live Oak man which, crossing the center line, collided head-on with the KIA Sorento the woman and two girls were riding in. The man was thrown out of the vehicle, pinned by the truck, First Coast News reports. The Dodge Ram driver, having re-entered the United States through Texas in the previous year, is said to have been undocumented.
Responding to the unfolding disaster, a Toyota Camry driven by a 44-year-old man from Live Oak collided with the overturned truck, unable to avoid the initial crash scene, reports the Florida Highway Patrol. The collision ultimately set all vehicles ablaze and resulted in dire outcomes for nearly all involved. The Camry driver sustained serious injuries and was transported to UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville for treatment.
Adding a contentious note, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier took to social media to disclose that the driver of the pickup was found with cocaine and was "likely drunk while driving in the wrong lane," said in a post on X that was shared amid the early hours of investigation, as per Lake City Reporter.
