Tennessee is poised for a tourism upgrade, thanks to a substantial financial boost from the state's Department of Tourist Development. According to the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development, the Commissioner Mark Ezell confirmed that more than $2 million in Tourism Enhancement Grants will be awarded to 30 communities across the state. These funds are earmarked for projects aimed at bolstering local tourism assets, which range from improving stages and signage to enhancing historic preservation efforts and bringing ADA accessibility to local hotspots.
With the emphasis on driving growth within Tennessee's tourism sector, these grants represent a targeted investment towards that goal. "Tourism is a key driver of economic growth," Ezell said, in a statement published by the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development. He noted the ripple effect that such investment has on communities, highlighting, the support it provides to small businesses, the creation of jobs, and the additional visitor-paid tax dollars that benefit Tennessee residents.
Assistant Commissioner of Rural Tourism and Outreach, Melanie Beauchamp, has underscored the strategic value of these grants in particular for rural communities. As reported by the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development, she pointed out that the grants "are an investment in the future of Tennessee’s communities, helping attract visitors and generate lasting opportunities." Beauchamp expressed that the impact of the investment is particularly significant in rural areas, aiding in transforming local attractions into sustained sources of economic and community growth.
This year's grants have notably focused attention on 12 at-risk and distressed communities. This targeted approach aims to level the playing field, ensuring that these areas receive a fair share of resources that could spur a virtuous cycle of development. A complete list of the grant recipients, and the specific amounts allocated can be found on the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development official announcement. These funds are anticipated to shape local landscapes in such a way that tourism flourishes, creating a more vibrant economy and, improving the overall quality of life for Tennessee residents.
