Early this morning, a large fire broke out at a home on Elliot Street near Keene State College, prompting a four-alarm response, according to updates from the City of Keene. The Keene Fire Department responded around 8:15 a.m. and brought the fire under control by late morning, as per My Keene Now report.
According to NBC Boston, three firefighters suffered non-life-threatening injuries, including burns and smoke inhalation, and were taken to Cheshire Medical Center for treatment. All are expected to recover. Nearby Wheelock Elementary School was evacuated as a precaution, with students relocated to Keene Middle School.
Traffic in the area was restricted, with police closing the stretch of Main Street between the Marlborough Street/Winchester Street roundabout and the Main Street intersection to allow access for emergency vehicles.
The City of Keene thanked surrounding fire and EMS departments for their mutual aid, noting that their support helped manage the blaze and maintain city coverage. Residents were also advised that temporary water discoloration may occur due to firefighting efforts. Officials plan to begin investigating the cause of the fire once it is safe to enter the site.
