The Union County Library is hosting a free weekly reading program for kids, dubbed "Paws to Read", encouraging them to practice literacy with a furry friend by their side. Aimed at boosting confidence and reading skills among young readers, the program allows children to read aloud to a certified therapy dog in select library locations. Each session is one-on-one, providing a quiet space for kids to focus while they bond with their four-legged audience.

To stoke excitement and foster a sense of connection even before they say their first word to the dog. According to the Union County Library's announcement, at each visit's conclusion, participants receive a special bookmark tailored to the dog they've read with, creating a collection opportunity as diverse as the dogs themselves.

The dogs are varied in breed and size, but all are certified through the Alliance of Therapy Dogs to ensure safe and gentle companionship for the children they meet. One of the program's certified tail-waggers is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Britan. Well-known among the kids, Britan not only listens but brings along his own tale, "Moments with Britan, a Therapy Dog" by Barbara J. Peters. Kids often choose to read this very book back to him, creating a delightful circle of storytelling.

"Paws to Read" welcomes families at various times and locations, all listed on the Union County Library Children's Programs Calendar. No need to sign up in advance—it's a walk-in affair. Union County Library is dedicated enthusiastically to expanding "Paws to Read".
